DISASTER Risk REDUCTION (DRR)

Marginalized communities are transformed, become disaster resilient through knowledge, skills and adaptive coping standards to achieve socio-economic sustainability.

THEMATIC GOAL

To effectively integrate disaster risk management (DRM) systems into sustainable development interventions through community-based planning, capacity building, and institutional linkages.

INTRODUCTION

Pakistan is a disaster-prone country with a high vulnerability to climate change and global warming. Pakistan is ranked as the 5th most vulnerable country to climate change according to the Global Climate Risk Index (UN-Habitat Pakistan Country Report 2023). Northern and western parts are particularly affected by earthquakes whereas flooding and drought affect the southern parts of the country. Rural livelihoods are specifically affected by such natural hazards causing further stress on those living below the poverty line. Disaster Management is one of the significant themes of Pak Mission Society (PMS) tailored to reduce disaster-caused risks through systematic efforts and immediate humanitarian assistance to our country’s most vulnerable and at-risk populations. It focuses on saving lives, protecting the assets of local communities (animals, crops, livelihoods, and infrastructure), and supporting the morale of the affected. PMS has demonstrated the highest standard of effectiveness and quality in humanitarian response during the last ten years recognizing that people have the fundamental right to live with dignity. We have been working in disaster-prone areas of Pakistan for many years. It is now increasing the resilience of the targeted communities and allowing survivors to take part in various capacity-building and vocational sessions ensuring that they are well equipped to learn disaster coping mechanisms with backup tools, emergency, and first-aid kits, along with health and hygiene awareness in such situations. We aim to provide emergency response and relief such as shelter, water, food, and medicine to communities affected by natural disasters, epidemics, and conflicts.
